'Friends of City Centre’ is a new group looking to recruit volunteers to join Wolverhampton BID (Business Improvement District) team in greening and enhancing the city centre. Friends of City Centre will be an active group helping to make our city centre vibrant, cleaner and brighter for visitors, workers and businesses to enjoy. The activities of the group will wide and varied and we are looking for new “Friends” to join us to help keep the city centre a nice, friendly, and welcoming place.
Wolverhampton City Centre is celebrating city status for 21 years this year and to complement the great work undertaken by Wolverhampton BID in promoting the city centre through marketing, promotions and events the BID has great ambitions to enter the Britain in Bloom competition. Britain in Bloom is one of the most effective and longest running environmental competitions in the UK. Each year it grows in size and importance and involves more people, groups and organisations within the community making a difference in their local area. Did you know that Wolverhampton on last entry into the Britain in Bloom 2012 got a Silver Gilt Award?
The city centre has some wonderful outdoor spaces such as St Peters Gardens, St John Square, Queen Square and Victoria Square where we see people who live, work or visiting the city centre sit and relax. We would like the ‘Friends of the City Centre’ group to enhance the great work of the Wolverhampton BID and help us improve our pocket parks, green spaces and add some colour to our designated spaces for recreational use.
Wolverhampton BID is also in the process of ‘adopting’ Wolverhampton’s Train Station. Our hopes are that combined with the on-going physical transformation of the station building through working closer with the station team we can work together to enhance peoples’ experience whilst using or passing through the train station. “Friends of the City Centre” would help with planting and bringing general improvements to both the inside and outside of the station such as reporting vandalism and faults, painting, graffiti removal, litter picking and obviously planting and gardening duties. You might even want to be involved with organising art installations and displays or have ideas on what to do with empty units.
If you do have an interest in gardening, or general handy work, you have green fingers, dedication, and passion to volunteer some time we would love to hear from.
Help us make Wolverhampton a great place to enjoy and grow our community of “City Centre Friends”
