Saturday 24th November saw the streets of
Wolverhampton come alive with shoppers at the start of the Festive Periods
Christmas shopping. Wolverhampton BID had put a call out in the weeks building
up to the day on social media and to city centre partners to donate their
“preloved clothes” to be sold on a market stall supported by LSD Promotions in
aid of The Alternative Giving Campaign that encourages people to donate money
directly to local homeless charities, rather than giving it directly to someone
begging on the city centre streets.
The Alternative Giving scheme was set up by
the Wolverhampton BID Co Ltd back in October 2016. It aims to ensure that
money goes direct to service providers/charities that help the homeless in
Wolverhampton. By giving to the scheme, rather than directly to beggars, the
public can then ensure their money is used as their good-will intended and to
date has raised an impressive £12,153.60 for P3 Navigator, St Georges Hub &
The Wolverhampton Street Pastors.
Cherry Shine, BID Director, said: “Helping the homeless and
vulnerable individuals with the right support is fundamental to this
initiative. By providing an easy way to donate directly to these worthy
charities, and working with the right agencies, we will be able to support a
positive change in our city centre and I am so proud of the £380 raised on the
market stall on the day”.
