SMALLEST ZOO

Wolverhampton welcomes World’s Smallest Zoo

The World’s Smallest Zoo is coming to Wolverhampton’s Change Makers Hub for the Easter holidays (22 March - 8 April)

The “zoo”, which has never been seen before, features 24 animal sculptures so small they fit inside the eye of a needle.

Each animal is unique and can only be viewed under a powerful microscope.

The family-friendly exhibition is an immersive experience with video, integrated lighting and sound effects.

Six interactive games, including a buzz tower and sliding puzzle, will also test families’ skills and dexterity against the zoo’s creator.

The World’s Smallest Zoo is the creation of renowned micro-artist David A. Lindon, a British artist with an engineering background.

The collection is the sum of more than two years’ of painstaking work. David first needs to create his own handmade microscopic tools because they is nothing small enough that you can buy from a specialist shop.

He then works at night for 6-10 hours at a time to avoid the vibrations of the daytime traffic. He enters a meditative state and is required to work between heartbeats.

The World’s Smallest Zoo is brought to the city by Enjoy Wolverhampton BID and Hammond Galleries.

Edward Hammond, founder of Smallest In The World and owner of Hammond Galleries in Shifnal, said “The World’s Smallest Zoo showcases the amazing feats that a human can achieve. Each microscopic sculpture is under 1mm in size and would be impossible to make by machine. It is really something you have to see to believe. We hope that families from across the Midlands come to enjoy it in Wolverhampton before it travels around the world.”

David A Lindon is a trailblazer in the field of microscopic art, having created many world first’s including the first wearable art gallery insides a watch and the world’s first microscopic triptych painting.

David is one of the top three micro artists in the world, alongside Wolverhampton micro artist Willard Wigan and Birmingham micro engraver Graham Short, whose microscopic creations sell for up to £200,000 each.

Cherry Shine, Wolverhampton BID managing director, said “We’re delighted to welcome The World’s Smallest Zoo to Wolverhampton, it is a unique spectacle to behold.

We welcome families and people of all ages to come and see the smallest sights at the Change Makers Hub at Wolverhampton Train Station.

It forms an exciting program of art in Wolverhampton this year alongside Street Stories.

Street Stories is an interactive art exhibition on vacant retail units in the city centre.”
